Our Mission

Our Values

Our Vision

At Neighborhood School, we believe all people deserve freedom and connection. We understand that people have created systems of harm and disconnection. We view it as our responsibility and right to join others in restoring and rebuilding the world. We give students the tools to create the world they deserve to live in, while navigating the world they’ve inherited.

We believe that learning happens through relationship and at the diverse paces of human development. In contrast to the rushed, rigid structures of the larger landscape of education, we root our teaching in the joy, humanity, and dignity of childhood. We slow down and tune into the individual and collective needs in our community. We balance each person’s freedom to be themselves, and the group’s diverse needs to thrive together.

Our Approach

Within our intentionally small school setting, we braid together multiple programs.

  • We provide excellent early childhood and elementary instruction that emphasizes play, art-making, interdisciplinary projects, and critical thinking processes.

  • We partner closely with students’ families, offering our experience with child development and learning from their familial and cultural values.

  • We govern our school democratically. Staff participate in power-sharing activities to learn from each other and make decisions together.

  • We design classroom projects to support our broader community’s organizing efforts, and in reciprocity, we invite our broader community to support our school as well.
